The United Nations General Assembly approved a resolution backing Palestinian statehood and a two-state solution on Friday.
The resolution condemns Hamas’s October 7 attack on southern Israel and criticizes Israel’s siege and starvation in Gaza.
Global Support Overwhelms Opposition
Out of 193 member states, 142 supported the New York Declaration, 10 opposed, and 12 abstained from the vote.
France and Saudi Arabia presented the resolution, calling for Palestinian Authority control over all Palestinian territory.
The declaration instructs officials to form a transitional administrative committee immediately after a Gaza ceasefire.
Calls for Hamas Disarmament
The resolution directs Hamas to end its rule in Gaza, surrender weapons, and release all hostages to the Palestinian Authority.
It emphasizes the PA must assume governing responsibilities across Palestinian territories.
Proposal for UN Protection Mission
The resolution urges the UN to deploy a mission to protect Palestinian civilians and ensure safety for both Palestinians and Israelis.
It calls for the mission to support peaceful transfer of authority, monitor the ceasefire, and oversee progress toward long-term peace.
