An electric streetcar derailed in Lisbon on Wednesday, killing at least 15 people and injuring 18 more. Portuguese television showed the yellow-and-white tram lying on its side along a narrow, steep hill road. Its roof and sides appeared partially crumpled as dozens of emergency workers rushed to the scene. Local media reported the accident happened around 6 pm, at the start of the evening rush hour. Authorities have not yet identified the cause of the derailment.
President Condemns Tragedy
President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa offered condolences to victims’ families and all affected by the crash.
Glória Funicular Serves Residents
The Glória funicular carries more than 40 passengers, both seated and standing. Lisbon residents frequently use the steep-hill tram for daily travel.
