A global research team discovered that artificial intelligence interprets Polish commands more precisely than those in any other language. English, often viewed as the default for AI, placed only sixth. The University of Maryland and Microsoft collaborated on the study, testing 26 languages across major AI systems to measure accuracy and comprehension.
“Our findings were unexpected,” the researchers wrote. “English did not dominate. It ranked sixth when processing longer texts, while Polish produced the most accurate responses.” The study examined how models from OpenAI, Google Gemini, Qwen, Llama, and DeepSeek reacted to identical prompts translated into multiple languages.
Machines Handle Polish Commands With Surprising Ease
Polish achieved an impressive 88% average accuracy, outperforming all other languages in clarity and consistency. The Polish Patent Office commented, “Polish appears to be the most precise for AI instructions. Humans struggle with it, but AI handles it effortlessly.”
The result surprised experts since Polish-language data remains far scarcer than English or Chinese datasets used to train AI. Despite this, machines performed best with Polish inputs, while Chinese scored near the bottom of the 26 tested languages.
How Different Languages Ranked in AI Understanding
AI proved most fluent in Polish, followed closely by French, Italian, and Spanish. Russian secured fifth place, with English just behind it in sixth. Ukrainian, Portuguese, German, and Dutch completed the top ten.
Researchers concluded that the complexity of a language doesn’t necessarily limit machine comprehension. Ironically, the language humans find hardest to master may be the one AI understands most naturally.
